Singapore retail sales saw another modest increase in August, led by stronger demand for cosmetics and mobile phones.
According to the Department of Statistics, retail sales (excluding motor vehicles, parts and accessories) rose 1.6 per cent, compared to the revised 1.3 per cent growth in July.
The estimated total retail sales value was SG$3.8 billion (US$2.96 billion), of which 18.2 per cent were from online.
On a seasonally adjusted basis, August’s retail sales increased 0.6 per cent compared to July.
The majority of categories recorded year-on-year growth during the month, led by cosmetics, toiletries and medical goods (up 11.2 per cent) and computer and telecommunications equipment (up 10.7 per cent). These were partly driven by higher sales of cosmetics, toiletries, and mobile phones.
Recreational goods recorded a 4.3 per cent growth, and petrol service stations rose 3.2 per cent. Furniture, apparel, supermarkets and department stores posted improvements of 0.7-1.6 per cent.
In contrast, retailers of watches and jewellery posted a decline of 2.7 per cent, reversing a strong 11 per cent boost in July. Food and alcohol sales also dropped 1.1 per cent.
Sales of food and beverage services fell 1.6 per cent in August, extending the 1.9 per cent decline in July.
