More Subway for Malaysia

American fast food chain Subway plans to add more outlets in Malaysia in an effort to match the network numbers of KFC.

The Connecticut-based restaurant chain that primarily sells submarine sandwiches and salads plans to spend RM4 million (US$1.26 million) to open six to eight more outlets in northern Malaysia by the year’s end.

“We are aiming to match Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) in terms of number of outlets in the region,” said northern region development agent Sean Lim.

“We heard that people have been demanding healthier, greener food and are opting for a healthier lifestyle – and we decided to take the opportunity to set up the outlets there.”

Subway has opened 107 outlets in Malaysia since its arrival there in 2006.

Subway will also ramp up its focus in China with plans to operate 900 outlets by the end of 2015. Currently, it has 318 outlets across China since its first launch in 1995.

Worlwide, Subway has 37,038 restaurants in 100 countries.
