New public holiday in September

Hong Kong’s administration has proposed to designate September 3 this year as a ‘special holiday’ to mark the 70th anniversary of China’s victory in the war with Japan.
By designating September 3, 2015 as a General Holiday, all banks, educational establishments, public offices and government departments will not need to open on that day. Under the Employment Ordinance, if the day is declared a Statutory Holiday, all employees will be entitled to this additional holiday, and those who have been employed under a continuous contract for three months or more before the Statutory Holiday will be entitled to holiday pay.
A Bill to implement the public holiday will be published in the Gazette on May 22 and introduced into the LegCo on May 27.
A government spokesman says the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government will organise various commemorative activities to mark the anniversary.
“To facilitate community participation in these activities in remembrance of history, the Government will introduce the Special Holiday (3 September 2015) Bill into the Legislative Council (LegCo). The Bill seeks to designate on a one-off basis September 3, 2015 as an additional General Holiday (GH) and Statutory Holiday (SH).”
The spokesman said the Central People’s Government will organise a range of large-scale commemorative activities throughout the Mainland and has already designated September 3 as a National Holiday.
