eBay Thailand chases millennials

eBay Thailand is to upgrade its tired interface to be more appealing to millennials.

“We’re on the verge of giving our brand a new look, which is expected to be completed by March 2017,” Boonphan Boonprayoon, country manager of eBay Marketing (Thailand) told the Thailand Mobile Summit 2016 seminar organised by Bangkok Entrepreneur.

The upgrade will represent the largest investment in the business since it launched in Thailand in 2009.

Boonphan said Thailand has the largest number of eCommerce transactions of any Asean market, although the company plans to continue to focus on exports by SMEs and individuals, including in gems and jewellery, auto accessories and home and garden products – currently the three largest export categories.

Last year eBay globally achieved a gross merchandise volume (GMV) of US$21 billion, with mobile accounting for $9.5 billion. However in the latest quarter the pendulum swung in favour of hand-held devices, now accounting for 57 per cent of GMV.

“Mobile commerce is forecast to account for half of global e-commerce transaction volume by 2018, thanks to the 3.4 billion mobile broadband subscriptions worldwide,” he told delegates.
