Sales improve for more Macau retailers

More Macau retailers had year-on-year sales growth in September, according to the latest business climate survey by the Macau Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).
Of the 135 retailers surveyed, 40 per cent claimed their sales had increased year-on-year in September compared to 26 per cent in August. Meanwhile, the proportion of retailers whose sales declined fell 13 points to 57 per cent.
Sales grew for all leather goods merchants and for more than half of retailers of adult clothing, while 58 per cent of those selling watches, clocks and jewellery said sales had declined.
Of the 167 interviewed restaurants and similar establishments, 63 per cent reported a decline in receipts, up from 61 per cent the previous month. In particular, 62 per cent of local-style cafes, congee outlets and noodle shops said sales had declined in the month, up 14 points.
The report follows an earlier survey showing Golden Week failed to have a positive impact on Macau retail sales.
