Godzilla retail shop stomping into Tokyo

It will be easy to find the world’s first official Godzilla retail shop when it opens in Tokyo at the end of next month – it is in the Shinjuku Toho Building, which is famed for the 12m Godzilla head on its rooftop.

Godzilla Store Tokyo will have about 500 items on sale, some of which are exclusive to the store. It is on the first floor of the Shinjuku building which also houses restaurants, a hotel and a cinema.

The store’s opening is timed to precede the release of the movie Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters in Japan in November. The store is owned by Toho, the Japanese movie company that created Godzilla, the giant lizard-like monster that features in 29 of its films.

Toho CGO (chief Godzilla officer) Keiji Ota says it is hoped the store will “grow into an evolving shop loved by people of all ages”.

With this in mind, it features more than 500 different types of monster merchandise ranging from action figures to t-shirts and even traditional Japanese tea cups, plus a collaboration with Japanese character company Sanrio, which brought the world Hello Kitty.

Many items are limited editions with some being exclusive to the store.
