Chan Hon Meng pops up in London

For a short time only, the world’s cheapest Michelin-starred restaurant, run by Chan Hon Meng, has made an appearance in London as a pop-up.

“Hawker Chan” won his first Michelin star in 2016 for his Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice & Noodle stall in Singapore. Along with fellow awardee Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle, they were the first streetfood chefs to be honoured by the guide. It also meant that, at the equivalent of about US$1.42 for a bowl of his signature Hong Kong soya chicken rice, he was offering the cheapest Michelin-starred meal in the world.

For three days, Chan has been serving his signature dish at Kerb King’s Cross market in the British capital. And even though the price of £6 (about $8.43) will run nearly six times that of the original stand, it is still regarded as a good deal for a Michelin-star meal.

Only 200 portions have been sold for two the hours each day the pop-up has been open. They were prepared by Chan himself from inside a Southbank shipping container re-decorated to look like an authentic hawker stall. Diners have been able to enter a contest to be flown to Singapore to experience the original stall.
