Frasers Group’s subsidiary, Frasers Group Asia, is to take UK activewear brand Sports Direct to Indonesia through a joint venture with local retail giant PT MAP Active, which is also Foot Locker’s distributor in the region.

The Indonesia foray will include the rollout of Frasers Group-owned brands at Sports Direct stores in the country, including Karrimor, Everlast, Lonsdale, Slazenger, USA Pro, Firetrap, Soul Cal and Jack Wills.

Michael Murray, CEO of Frasers Group, said the partnership is part of the group’s international expansion strategy, following “the success of the existing business in Malaysia”, where it currently has 35 retail stores.

“The Indonesian market offers an exciting opportunity to highlight our brands, to the fourth largest population in the world,” said Paul Gibbons, MD at Frasers Group Asia. “We enter this partnership with a long-term view to build the best multi-sport destination which has been a great success in the UK.”

Earlier this year, PT MAP Active, took over Foot Locker’s operations in Singapore and Malaysia – including e-commerce sites – in a move the footwear giant says will further grow its presence in Southeast Asia.
