Environmental NGO Redress has revealed the 10 global finalists for the Redress Design Award 2025, a competition that supports emerging designers in addressing fashion’s environmental impact through circular design.
An estimated 100 billion to 150 billion garments are produced globally each year, most ending up in landfills or incinerated. In response, Redress brings together fashion designers and academic institutions to “rise to the challenge” and advocate for systemic change in design education.
This year’s 10 finalists were chosen from a global pool of designers across 57 regions.
The finalists are:
- Casbeth Tshegofatso Marobane, South Africa
- Lucie Albert, Germany
- Carla Zhang, Mainland China
- Mara San Pedro, Philippines
- Hawon Park, Korea
- Nathan Moy, Hong Kong
- Heyun Pan, Mainland China
- Wen Hanzhang, Canada
- Hugo Dumas, France
- Yixuan Nie, USA
Each finalist’s collection will be shipped to Hong Kong for a professional photoshoot, with garments delivered using DHL Express’s GoGreen Plus international air service.
Dr Christina Dean, founder and board chair of Redress, described the fashion industry’s environmental footprint as a “ticking time bomb”.
“Every second, the equivalent of one rubbish truck of textiles is landfilled or burned, and this is worsening. Redress’ role vitally brings together designers, academia and industry annually via our competition to encourage courageous acts to accelerate circular fashion,” she explains.
Finalists will participate in a 10-day educational boot camp featuring workshops, design challenges, and an in-depth experience at TAL Apparel, a manufacturer that produces 55 million garments annually.
TAL Apparel is a large, Hong Kong-based garment manufacturer that produces a wide variety of clothing items, including shirts, blouses, knits, pants, outerwear, and suits.
The winner will present their collection at the Greenext Expo in Shanghai and receive mentorship from designer Flora Cheong-Leen to develop a limited-edition upcycled item for retail. A development fund of HK$50,000 (US$6,400), supported by Redress and the Tian Art Foundation, will also be awarded.
The Redress Design Award 2025 is supported by the Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency as lead sponsor, alongside DHL Express. Established in 2007, Redress is an Asia-focused organisation committed to reducing waste in the fashion industry.
