Shoppers in Hong Kong are ‘Wellcomed’ back in time with the supermarket turning its refreshed Prosperous Garden branch into a nostalgia-themed concept store.
Located inside a Grade II historic building on Canton Road, the store takes design cues from the 1950s to the 1970s, blending retro aesthetics with contemporary retail.
The concept is positioned as an ode to Hong Kong’s everyday heritage, offering shoppers a mix of immersive decor, curated local products, and souvenir-style merchandise.
At the entrance, LED signage inspired by the city’s iconic neon lights is set against mirrored tile walls.
Shoppers then pass through a silver-and-green turnstile into what Wellcome describes as a ‘time tunnel’, featuring red plastic lamps, vintage grocery backdrops, traditional street signs, an old-style telephone display, and a retro television selfie spot.
To extend the experience beyond the store, customers can purchase a limited-edition retro bag inspired by Wellcome’s classic red-and-yellow carrier bag. Priced at US$3.58 (HK$28), the bag is available with a minimum single purchase of $12.80 (HK$100).
Founded in 1945, Wellcome is Hong Kong’s longest-established supermarket chain. Owned by DFI Retail Group since 1964, it operates more than 320 stores across multiple banners.
