Hong Kong-listed beauty retailer Sa Sa International ended the last fiscal year on a high note, with significant increases in both sales and profitability.
The company’s profit for the year ended March 31 soared 160.5 per cent to HK$200.5 million (US$25.5 million). Total turnover surged 14.2 per cent to HK$4.38 billion, while gross profit grew 10.5 per cent to HK$1.67 billion.
The results reflected a complete turnaround from the previous year, when sales slid 9.7 per cent and profit fell 64 per cent amid headwinds.
Management attributed the latest achievement to ongoing enhancement in regional operational efficiency. The company closed its offline operations in Mainland China to focus on online sales and operations in its key markets – Hong Kong and Macao.
Hong Kong and Macao, which contribute nearly 80 per cent of total turnover, recorded a 16 per cent increase in offline sales and a 20 per cent uplift in online. The company operated 85 stores in the two regions as of March 31.
The markets also saw significant growth in same-store sales, number of transactions, average sales per transaction and number of items per transaction, resulting in a 62.7 per cent increase in profit.
In Mainland China, online sales remained down but at a controlled rate of 5.4 per cent. The closure of offline operations allowed the company to reallocate its resources, which helped achieve a profit of HK$9.1 million during the year.
The Southeast Asia business, which includes Singapore and Malaysia, boosted offline sales at its 75 stores by 9 per cent and online sales by 40 per cent. The region, however, was affected by rising cost-of-living and macroeconomic headwinds, resulting in a loss of HK$14.8 million.
Looking ahead, Sa Sa said it will continue to further extend its presence in high-traffic tourist districts and residential areas, with six to seven new stores planned for the first half of the new fiscal year. More measures will also be taken to optimise product display and operational efficiency.
For the first quarter ended June 21, the company saw turnover increase 24 per cent, with offline sales up 30.9 per cent while online sales down 3.2 per cent.
