Walmart expands foreign bribery probe

The world’s largest retailer, Walmart, is expanding its probe of corrupt business practices beyond Mexico.

The retailer said it will extend its inquiries or investigations regarding allegations of potential Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) to Brazil, China and India.

“Inquiries or investigations regarding allegations of potential FCPA violations have been commenced in a number of foreign markets where we operate, including but not limited to Brazil, China and India,” the company said in its regulatory filing.

Walmart spokesperson David Tovar said the company has spent more than US$35 million on its global FCPA compliance efforts over the past 18 months to show its commitment to having a strong and effective global compliance program.

“We are working diligently to strengthen our compliance programs and dedicating considerable resources to this effort,” said Tovar.

Walmart began conducting a worldwide review of its policies, practices and internal controls for FCPA compliance last year. The investigation stemmed from allegations that Walmart CEO in Mexico has bribed officials to streamline projects seven years ago.
