Amazon reaches India

US e-commerce giant Amazon has launched its online marketplace in India.

Amazon entered India the first time with Junglee.com, allowing customers to search for products and compare prices, but not to buy.

According to Amazon’s India manager Amit Agarwal, the marketplace has fully complied with all Indian laws which prohibit foreign online retailers to directly sell in India.

Amazon will act as an aggregator for retailers who are selling their merchandise through the marketplace.

The Indian online market is expected to almost double in size annually.

“The launch of Amazon.in is definitely good news for the e-commerce sector. The market is huge in India and there is opportunity for all players who create a huge customer proposition,” said Ashish Bhinde of Avendus Group.

Amazon will be in competition with Indian online retailers including Flipkart, Snapdeal, Jabong and Indiatimes Shopping.
