Reebok plans Indian comeback

Reviving its business in India after been hit by fraud allegations, Adidas-owned Reebok is planning major expansion.

Reebok will open 100 ‘fit-hub’ concept stores by 2014, 50 of them this year. Most will be located in metro cities with some in second-tier cities.

“What happened in the past is behind us. We are now growth-focused and we will start with our new retail format of ‘fit-hub’ stores in India,” said Adidas Group India MD Eric Haskell.

“By opening 100 fit-hub stores in India, we are making pretty substantial statement and it also shows about our commitment to the market here. Our focus is now on business. We remain committed to the Reebok brand in India.”

The ‘fit-hub’ concept stores will offer fitness and training products. It will also be staffed with personnel who will give information, guidelines and advice about fitness events.

Reebok plans to eventually convert all of its 490 stores in India into the ‘fit-hub’ format.

In May 2012, Reebok India was accused of Rs 870 crore fraud involving former MD Shubhinder Singh Prem and COO Vishnu Bhagat. The alleged fraud is still under investigation.
