Starbucks’ licensee partner Sari Coffee Indonesia has opened Starbucks’ first signing store in the country in Central Jakarta, the brand’s 17th signing store in the world.

Located on Jl. Tanjung Karang No 3 Kebon Melati in Central Jakarta, Starbucks Tata Puri Community Store is served by staff employed from the local deaf and hard of hearing community.

“More than 150 people applied from across the country,” said Anastasia Dwiyani, senior GM of human capital at Sari Coffee Indonesia. “The baristas who have been selected are a diverse group, including a former swimming para-athlete and fashion models.”

Customers who don’t know sign language can order by using a writing tablet.

The store facade features a signature siren logo with Bisindo sign language. Upon entering the store, customers are greeted with a mural wall and a display of exclusive merchandise collections. The store design is highlighted by the giant mural painting created by deaf artist Indira Natalia.

The launch of Indonesia’s first Starbucks signing store coincides with the brand’s 20th anniversary in the country, where it now has a presence in 44 cities. In 2020, Starbucks opened the first Community Store in the Tanah Abang neighbourhood of Jakarta, to create educational opportunities for youth in Tanah Abang.

“The signing store demonstrates our commitment to creating a more inclusive and diverse work environment, and to widening access to all communities,” said Anthony McEvoy, leader of Sari Coffee Indonesia.

Last month, the US-headquartered coffee chain expanded its footprint into Laos under the partnership with its licensee Coffee Concepts, marking its 84th market globally.
