Supermarket chain Wellcome is expanding its nostalgia-inspired retail concept to two more locations in Hong Kong: Victoria Road in Kennedy Town and Sim City in Mong Kok.

The openings follow the success of the retailer’s first retro-themed concept store at Prosperous Garden in Yau Ma Tei, which launched earlier this year.

All three stores are designed to celebrate old Hong Kong through immersive experiences, exclusive merchandise, and brand collaborations inspired by the city’s cultural heritage.

The Victoria Road store draws inspiration from Hong Kong’s iconic tram network, featuring tram tracks embedded in the floor, vintage green-and-yellow colour schemes, and a recreation of a 1990s tram stop.

Meanwhile, the Sim City location pays tribute to the city’s traditional dining culture. 

Designed to evoke the atmosphere of open-air dai pai dong food stalls and classic cha chaan teng cafes, the two-storey store features vintage red-and-yellow Wellcome signage and walls lined with photographs of Nathan Road’s neon-lit streetscape from the 1980s and 1990s.

Customers can also try a retro ping-pong spring-pull machine, once a common sight in local arcades, with free play available with any purchase.

To mark the launch, a specially themed Wellcome tram will travel across the island from June 8 to 11. Decorated in vintage colours and classic Wellcome branding, the tram is designed as a tribute to the city’s past, offering passengers a nostalgic journey through old Hong Kong.

Established in 1945, Wellcome is Hong Kong’s oldest supermarket chain and operates the territory’s largest grocery store network with 320 across the city. The retailer has been wholly owned by DFI Retail Group since 1964.
