Online food delivery has become a vital element of Singaporean life, owing in part to shifting purchasing habits during the Covid-19 pandemic.

In addition to food, delivery platforms like Deliveroo also integrate ordering groceries and non-food items, gifting, and in-app donations. Consumers are reported to be more interested in rider tipping on these platforms as the sector continues to add value to various aspects of life beyond offering day-to-day ready-to-eat meals.

According to Deliveroo data, 68 per cent of people use food delivery as part of their everyday lives, and 80 per cent expect to use it more in the coming year. Almost nine out of 10 (87 per cent) respondents agree with the statement “I make more of my spare time thanks to delivery platforms”.

Average expenditure on food delivery services has also climbed to $118 per month, up from $108 per month in a 2022 poll, with those aged 46-55 spending the most, at an average of $169 per month.

“The latest survey results reinforce how the role of food delivery services in Singaporeans’ day-to-day lives have further evolved in today’s landscape,” said Jason Parke, GM at Deliveroo Singapore

“Going beyond ready-to-eat meals, we see how customers are increasingly turning to food delivery platforms for other goods and services that add value to various aspects of their lives.”

Aside from ready-to-eat meals, demand for other goods ordered via delivery apps is also increasing, ushering in a new era of what food delivery services are used for, the survey found.

One in two consumers prefer having groceries delivered over travelling to a supermarket.
